BESS Technology

Modular battery energy storage system — integrated engineering from cell to grid.

Overview

A battery energy storage system (BESS) stores energy so it can be used later. REAP builds the whole system as one connected chain — from a single battery cell, to a module, to a rack, to a full container, and finally to the power grid — using one consistent engineering approach.

It starts at the cell. REAP uses LFP (lithium iron phosphate) cells, a safe and long-life battery chemistry, and groups them into standard modules. Modules are mounted into racks that share a common power line, and several racks sit inside a 20 ft container. Each container also holds three key parts that keep it safe and reliable: a thermal management system (TMS), which uses liquid cooling to keep the batteries at the right temperature; a fire suppression system (FSS), which detects and stops fire; and a battery management system (BMS), which keeps the batteries running safely. Because every part is a standard building block, the same design grows from a single 3.73 MWh container up to many containers working together — with no custom engineering needed at each step.

The system connects to the grid through a high-voltage line rated up to 1,500 Vdc and works with all major inverter platforms. Each container talks to the outside world over CAN, RS485 and TCP/IP, so it links easily to monitoring and control systems. This lets the battery help keep the grid stable, reduce load during the busiest hours, smooth out energy from solar and wind, and help restart power after an outage.
